Summary

If you're short on time but still fancy doing a little bit of trekking before hitting the highlights of Machu Picchu, then the Huchuy Qosqo trail is perfect for you.  With only 17km of trail and  a maximum altitude climbed of 4350m, it is ideal for those looking for an introductory trek in the Peruvian Andes.

 

Itinerary

Day1Arrive Cusco

After arriving into Cusco's Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport today, you will be met by our driver who will transfer you to your hotel in the centre of Cusco.  You will have plenty of free time to explore the this beautiful city.

Day2Cusco - acclimatisation day

Cusco, the historic capital of the Incan Empire,  is located at an elevation of 3400m, so you will stay here an additional day to help you to acclimatise.  There is plenty to see and do or alternatively just relax and enjoy the local culture.

Day3Trek to Huchuy Qosqo

Early morning, you will be collected from your hotel and drive to Chinchero where you will visit the church, a typical market and an archaeological site, before continuing your journey to Tauqaq, a village located on the edge of Piuray Lagoon, where you will begin the trek. After a short briefing about the route, you will walk for 3 hours until you reach Tauqaq Pass (4,000m), where you will have views of Ausangate, Veronica, Pitusiray and Sahuasiray. From the pass you'll descend to our campsite, located just before Huchuy Qosqo.

Day4Agua Calientes

After breakfast we will visit Huchuy Qosqo, an imposing architectural Incan complex that includes a large open ceremonial centre. We will have a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley and the Vilcanota River from here. After a guided tour of this site we will continue on our way to Lamay at 3000m where we take a private bus to Ollantaytambo. From here we will go by rail to Agua Calientes, where we will stay overnight.

Day5Tour of Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast you will take the bus to Machu Picchu. You will have a guided tour of the ruins for approximately 2 hours and then free time to enjoy the citadel and an optional climb of Huanya Picchu. Around 1:00 pm you'll take the bus back to Agua Calientes, where you'll have time for lunch before you take the train back to Cusco.

Day6Depart Cusco

Our driver will collect you to return you to Cusco airport for your flight home.
